Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred: Level 1 | Review

In my previous blog, I wrote about how this year I am finally going to lose the weight I want (hopefully)! I mentioned briefly about the exercise I was doing which is Jillian Micheal’s 30 Day Shred. This workout DVD is pretty ‘old-school’, and I think it was released in 2008, but one of my old work colleagues mentioned it last year, I tried to do it then, but never actually completed it.

The workout uses a 3-2-1 interval technique, and there are three circuits in each workout which ends up being 20-minutes and a 5-minute warmup. Each circuit consists of three minutes of resistance moves, followed by two minutes of cardio, and the last part of each circuit is a minute of abs. As the name suggests, it is a 30-day workout, where you do level 1 for 10 days, level 2 for 10 days and level 3 for 10 days. My last day of level 1 was on Saturday the 12th of January, so I thought I would share my thoughts on this first level.

When I started level 1 I found it SO tough, probably because I am not an athlete in any way and I was carrying a few extra pounds from the festive period. However, as time went on the exercise got a little easier as my endurance got a little better. As you can see from the image above, I did miss a couple of days, as I defo wasn’t going to start on the 1st, and the other was because I had a spirometry test at the doctors and found it really hard to breathe afterwards.

I only encountered a few problems during this first level with the first being the pain in my knees. I do, however, think this down to me not doing the exercises properly. Secondly, there is an exercise where you pretend to use a skipping rope, and this made my calves ache terribly. Thirdly, I ended up having to turn the volume right down on the TV, as after a few days, the music and Jillian’s voice is VERY annoying.

However, I genuinely think I smashed it as according to my Apple Watch, I was burning approximately 170 calories in 20-minutes, although this lessened as I got used to the exercises.

Level 1 Results:

As I have mentioned in my previous blog, I am on a mission to lose weight and I’m doing Dry January, and I am doing this by simply counting calories along with doing a daily workout. So, by the end of level 1, I managed to lose a total of 7 pounds! Of course, I know this probably isn’t 7 pounds of fat, but mainly bloating and water retention, but I feel pretty good! I can definitely feel a difference around my stomach.

As of Sunday 13th January I have started level 2, and as I am writing this I have only completed 1-day, and my god it is hard! However, I will update you when I have finished it (if I finish it), as well as some ‘before and after’ pictures once I have finished level 3!

    That sounds like a decent DVD and I would also recommend Joe Wicks aka the body coach’s YouTube channel on HIIT workouts.

      It seems to be working well, but I will definitely check out his Youtube videos – thanks for the recommendation x
